Novel Study: The Cay
The 5th grade students are reading The Cay. First, we started with some pre-reading research to gain background knowledge. After reading each set of chapters, the students will respond to interpretation and critical thinking questions. This powerful book enables us to discuss many complex ideas such as: friendship, survival and sacrifice, overcoming impossible odds, as well as race relations. Through reading, we will witness tremendous character development motivated by suspenseful events. Lastly, we will wrap up our book study by holding a literature discussion.
