     WHAT IS TITLE 1?

     

    Title 1 is a federally funded program. Our district receives money from the federal government to provide extra reading support to children who are having difficulty learning to read and are most at risk.

    HOW WAS MY CHILD IDENTIFIED AS NEEDING EXTRA HELP?

    All students in kindergarten were assessed with multiple assessments.

    • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills)
    • EXACT Path (Computer based assessment and individual learning path for each student)
    • Classroom assessments- including letter identification, letter sounds, and rhyming
    • Bracken School Readiness Assessment

     The results of the tests were evaluated to identify the students with scores below expected benchmark scores.

     

    WHEN WILL I KNOW IF MY CHILD QUALIFIES FOR TITLE 1? 

    Parents will be notified in September if student qualifies for Title 1 Reading. If a student qualifies for Title 1 Reading later in the school year, parents will then be notified.

    HOW OFTEN WILL MY CHILD BE GIVEN HELP?

    Every day students will be given extra help by a Reading Specialist. (Mrs. DeHaut, or Ms. Ciaccia)

     

    WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE READING SPECIALIST?

    Mrs. DeHaut, and Ms. Ciaccia are each certified Reading Specialists.

     

    WHAT IF MY CHILD DID NOT QUALIFY?

    Students who show individual area of weakness will recieve extra reading assistance by the classroom teacher and me monitored by the reading specialists. If a student is not making sufficient progress throughout the year, Title 1 assistance may be available later in the year. If students qualify for Title 1 Reading later in the school year, parents will then be notified.

     

    IS TITLE 1 SPECIAL EDUCATION? 

    NO, Title 1 reading assistance is NOT special education.

     

    WILL MY CHILD GET THE EXTRA HELP ALL YEAR?

    Student progress will be monitored. If a student makes sufficient progress, then Title I assistance can be terminated. Parents will be notified if services are terminated.

     

    HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS MAKING PROGRESS?

    A progress report will be sent home with your child’s report card to inform you of your child’s progress.     WILL MY CHILD’S TEACHER ALSO INCLUDE MY CHILD IN READING GROUPS?

    All children receive reading instruction from their classroom teacher daily. The extra reading assistance from Title 1 does not replace regular classroom instruction.

     

    WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME TO HELP?

     

    • Practice the letters of the alphabet at home
    • Read poetry and rhyming stories to your child
    • Read folktales and fairy tales with your child
    • Practice sight words at home
    • Attend school literacy evets (reminders will be send home)

     

    WHAT WILL THE READING SPECIALIST BE DOING WITH MY CHILD?

    We will reinforcing the teachers' lessons and provide the reading help your child needs to be successful in kindergarten. Some of the programs we will be using are Heggerty and My Sidewalks: Early Reading Intervention. The areas of focus will include letter and sound recognition, phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight word recognition. This small group reading instruction is in addition to the instruction your child will receive in the classroom.
